NEW YORK (IFN) - Stocks on Wall Street ended up on Monday (Tuesday morning GMT), driven easing concerns about the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes and for petroleum-related equities surged after oil prices higher.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 117.61 points (0.66 percent) to close at 17880.85.
Broad-based index of the S & P 500 rose 13.66 points (0.66 percent) to finish at 2080.62, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 30.38 points (0.62 percent) to 4917.32.
William Dudley, president of the Federal Reserve of New York, on Monday, said in a meeting in New Jersey that the disappointing March jobs report showed that growth in the first quarter "tend to be quite weak." Dudley said a Fed rate hike "uncertain" and will remain dependent on economic data.
Airline stocks fell as US oil prices rose above 50 dollars a barrel. American Airlines slumped 2.2 percent, down 1.2 percent Delta Airlines, and Southwest Airlines fell 4.1 percent.
However, due to higher crude oil prices, members of ExxonMobil Dow rose 1.0 percent, and oil services company Halliburton and Nabors Industries respectively jumped 4.4 percent and 5.7 percent.
Technology stocks rose. Dow member, Apple and Microsoft, respectively up 1.6 percent and 3.1 percent. Amazon rose 1.3 percent and 2.1 percent increases Priceline.
